Not every damaged mirror is a write-off. Loose clips and tired adhesive can be re-fixed. A shallow nick on a polished edge can be dressed back. A frame that has dropped can be packed and levelled again. If the mirror itself is sound, a repair is nearly always the cheaper and faster call, and we will tell you honestly when that is the case.
Cracked mirror is where we stop repairing. Mirror is annealed float glass with a silver coating on the back, so a crack keeps travelling and the edges stay razor sharp. There is no filler, resin or trim that makes a cracked panel safe again. Broken mirror repair, in practice, means removing the damaged sheet and fitting a new one cut to the same size, which is a single visit on most jobs.
Desilvering is the other one people ask about. Once moisture creeps under the backing and leaves those black speckled edges, the coating is gone and cannot be brought back. Mirror replacement with a moisture-resistant, sealed-edge panel is the fix, and in a bathroom it is worth doing properly the first time. People underestimate mirror. A 1200 by 900 wall panel weighs close to twenty kilos, and unlike the toughened glass in a shower screen it is not designed to crumble. It breaks into long, curved shards with edges sharp enough to cut through a tea towel. When a mirror is cracked but still stuck to the wall, the adhesive and the crack are the only things holding that weight up.
Bathrooms are where most Sydney mirrors die, and it is almost always moisture rather than impact. Steam works in behind the silvering at the bottom edge, then the black speckling creeps upward a few millimetres a year. Running the exhaust fan for ten minutes after a shower and spraying cleaner onto the cloth instead of the glass buys a mirror years. The same damp that eats a mirror edge is what stiffens the rollers on a shower screen, so we often sort both in the one visit.
Wardrobe mirrors carry a second risk. A mirrored sliding panel that has dropped off its track can twist in the frame and crack under its own weight, which is why we back every wardrobe mirror with safety film so a break stays in one piece. A cracked or shattered mirror needs replacing, not repairing. Mirror is annealed glass, so a crack keeps spreading and the edges stay dangerously sharp. There is no safe way to bond it back together. What we do repair is everything around the glass: loose clips, failed adhesive, dropped frames and chipped polished edges. If the panel itself is intact, we will always try to save it.
That is desilvering, caused by moisture getting behind the backing. Steam and cleaning spray work in at the exposed bottom edge and lift the silver coating off the glass. It cannot be reversed or polished out. The fix is mirror replacement with a moisture-resistant panel and properly sealed edges, ideally set slightly off the wall so air can move behind it.
It depends on the size, the thickness and the edge finish, and you will know the figure before we start. A standard vanity mirror sits at the low end. Full-height wall panels, 6mm mirror, bevelled edges, safety backing or awkward access push it up. We quote a fixed price from your photos and measurements, and that is the price you pay on the day.
Yes. Broken and unsafe mirrors are treated as urgent call-outs. If a panel has shattered, is hanging loose or has cracked somewhere children or pets can reach, call us and we will get out to make the area safe, remove the loose glass and cover the wall. The replacement mirror is then cut to size and fitted as soon as it is ready. We are on the tools seven days.
Yes, and it is one of the most common calls we get. Old mirror adhesive grips hard, so the panel is scored, taped across the face to hold it together, then cut away from the wall with a wire and pry bars. Some plaster damage is normal and we will tell you upfront what to expect. We leave the wall scraped back and ready for the new mirror or for your painter.
Yes. Every mirror we fit is cut to your measurements. Rectangles, squares, arches, rounds, notches for power points and cut-outs for lights and tapware are all standard work. You can choose flat polished, bevelled or ground edges, plus safety backing where the mirror sits in a wardrobe, a gym or anywhere a break would be a risk. Everything is glazed to AS 1288.
We do, and we can usually save the door frame. The old mirror is stripped out of the aluminium surround, the rebate is cleaned up, and a new safety-backed panel is fitted and sealed back in. If the doors are also grinding or jumping their guides, that is fixed at the same time under sliding wardrobe door repair.
