Most people looking for a way to repair a window assume the whole unit has to come out. It rarely does. Timber and aluminium frames outlive several panes of glass, so a broken pane is a glazing job rather than a renovation. That is the gap between a modest repair bill and a quote that makes you wince, and it is why glass window replacements are almost always priced per pane rather than per window.
We work on every common Sydney window: double-hung timber sashes bedded in putty, aluminium sliders and awnings held by rubber gaskets, louvres, casements and large fixed panes. Residential glass repairs fill most of our week, though the same method covers units, shopfronts and offices. When the glass sits in a door instead of a window it needs a different approach, which is our sliding door glass re-glazing work, and clouded or damaged mirrors go through mirror cutting and replacement instead.

Cracked glass cannot be healed — tape and resin only hide a crack while it keeps travelling. We take the pane out, clear every fragment from the rebate, then cut, bed and seal new glass. Most broken glass repair jobs are finished in a single visit.

Sliders, awnings and louvres re-glazed with new rubber gaskets and wedge seals, so the pane sits firm and the window still opens, closes and locks the way it should.
A misted double-glazed unit has a failed edge seal, and no amount of cleaning reaches inside it. We replace the sealed unit itself, so the clear view and the insulation both come back.

Ordinary float glass breaks into long, sharp shards, which is why Australian Standard AS 1288 calls for Grade A safety glass in certain openings: anything low to the floor, beside a door, in a bathroom, or anywhere a person could fall against it. Plenty of Sydney homes were glazed long before those rules existed.
So when a pane comes out, we do not simply copy what was in there. We check what the standard asks for today. Laminated glass holds together on impact and is the usual pick near doors and walkways; toughened glass crumbles into small blunt pieces and suits wet areas and low panels. The same standard governs the glass used in shower screen glass repairs, which is why a bathroom pane is never plain float.

The glass has to be replaced. A crack cannot be healed, and tape or resin only hides it while it keeps spreading across the pane. The useful part is that only the glass is replaced, not the window. Your timber or aluminium frame stays where it is, we cut a new pane to the exact opening, and the window looks and works as it did before.
Move children and pets away from the area first, then leave any large hanging shards alone, because pulling at them can bring more glass down. If weather or security is a worry, tape thick cardboard or plastic sheeting across the opening from the inside. Send us a photo after that and we will make the window safe, then re-glaze it.
Whatever Australian Standard AS 1288 requires for that particular opening. Windows near a door, close to floor level or in a wet area need Grade A safety glass, usually laminated, which holds together when it breaks, or toughened, which crumbles into small blunt pieces. Higher windows away from foot traffic can take ordinary float glass. The choice is explained with the quote, so you can see why each pane costs what it costs.
Yes, and it is some of the work we enjoy most. Older Sydney sashes hold their glass with linseed putty or slim timber beads. We soften and lift the old putty carefully, take the pane out, then bed the new glass in fresh putty or matching beads. The frame keeps its age and its paint lines; only the glass is new.
The fog means the edge seal inside the double-glazed unit has failed and moisture has worked its way between the two panes, where cleaning cannot reach. The fix is to replace the sealed unit itself, both panes and the spacer, while your existing frame stays in place. The clear view and the insulation come back together.
Constantly. Aluminium sliders hold their glass with rubber gaskets and wedge seals rather than putty. We lift the sash out, remove the broken pane, fit new glass with fresh rubbers and set the sash back on its rollers. If the seals have gone hard with age we replace those too, so the window slides and locks properly again.
A standard pane in a timber or aluminium frame is usually done inside an hour once we are on site. Safety glass, odd sizes and double-glazed units sometimes need to be cut or made up first, which can add a day or two before fitting. You get a firm date when you book either way, and a broken window is made safe in the meantime.
