How Screen Door Locks Fail

The latch stops catching. You close the door; it bounces back open. Usually the door has dropped slightly over time, so the latch no longer lines up with the strike plate. Sometimes it’s a two-minute adjustment. Sometimes the latch itself has worn round, and nothing short of a new one will hold.
The key stops turning. Barrels wear out, especially near the coast where salt gets inside them. If you’re jiggling the key and lifting the handle at a special angle to get it to turn, the barrel is on its way out.
The handle goes floppy. When the handle spins without doing anything, the connection between the handle and the lock body has been stripped. No adjustment fixes that — it’s replacement time.
Something snapped. Triple locks on security doors have more moving parts, and one broken part can jam the lot. A security door that won’t lock — or worse, won’t open — needs sorting fast, and we treat those as priority calls.
Repair or Replace? The Honest Answer
If the lock body is fine and the door has just dropped, we adjust the door and realign the strike plate. Costs you a service call, nothing more. But if the barrel is worn, the latch is rounded off, or the handle has stripped, replacement is the smarter money. Screen door locks aren’t expensive parts — paying a technician to nurse an old one along twice a year costs more than a new lock ever will.

The number one DIY outcome we see is a nearly-right lock forced into a door, with new holes drilled next to old ones and a latch that half-catches. Then we get called anyway, and now the door needs patching too. Getting the right lock matched to the door first is the whole job.
