Window Glass Repair & Replacement in Asquith

If a window in your Asquith home or unit is cracked, smashed, fogged up or rattling in its frame, Amrah Glass & Aluminium can repair it or replace the glass outright, usually the same day or the next morning. We work on timber, aluminium and uPVC windows across the 2077 postcode, fit Grade A safety glass wherever AS 1288 calls for it, and can make a broken opening secure before the new pane arrives.

Ring 0468 497 928, or text us a photo and a rough measurement and we’ll price the job from that.

Does your window need repair or replacement?

It depends on what has actually failed. Glass can’t be patched once it cracks, so a damaged pane always gets replaced. The window around it is a different story, and that part can usually be repaired.

Here’s how we decide:

  • Replace the glass when the pane is cracked, shattered, chipped deep enough to catch a fingernail, or when a double-glazed unit has fogged between its layers.
  • Repair the window when the glass is fine but the beading is loose, the rubbers have perished, the putty has dried out, a sash won’t stay up or a lock no longer catches. If it’s a patio door dragging rather than a window, that’s handled by our sliding door roller and track repairs.
  • Replace the whole window only when the frame is rotted, bent or badly out of square. That happens less often than people expect, because most frames we see in Asquith are sound enough to take new glass.

Plenty of visits end up being a bit of both. We fit the new pane and sort out the hardware while the sash is already out.

What kinds of windows do Asquith homes have?

Asquith has a real mix, which is why we never turn up assuming it’s a standard aluminium slider. A lot of the suburb’s houses went up in the post-war decades, and many still have timber double-hung or casement windows with the glass held in by putty. Owners have often swapped some of those for aluminium over the years, usually at the front or in the kitchen, so a single house can have two or three frame types.

Around the station and along Peats Ferry Road, the newer apartments and townhouses mostly use powder-coated aluminium, sometimes double glazed. Asquith also has one of Hornsby Shire’s main industrial pockets, where we look after factory units and small offices with large fixed panes and glazed entries through our shopfront and commercial door glazing service.

How is glass replaced in an old timber sash?

Carefully, and without rushing the putty. We remove the broken glass, chip out the old putty and the small metal points that held the pane, then clean and prime the rebate so the new putty grips properly. The new pane is bedded in, pinned and puttied to a clean bevel.

Linseed putty needs a couple of weeks to skin over before it can be painted. We’ll let you know when it’s ready. The painting is worth doing, because bare putty dries out and cracks much sooner. If the sash cords are frayed or the timber around the rebate has gone soft, we’ll tell you on the spot rather than glazing over the problem.

Does bushfire risk change the replacement glass?

It can. Asquith takes in part of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park on its eastern side, and many blocks near the bush edge are mapped as bushfire prone. If your home was built or renovated to a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating, replacement glazing should meet AS 3959 for that level. In practice that often means toughened glass instead of ordinary float.

Your DA or construction certificate paperwork will show the rating. If it isn’t handy, mention it when you book and we’ll check the existing glass and frame before ordering. We won’t fit a lower-spec pane just because it’s quicker to source.

Which glass goes back into the frame?

We match the glass to where the window sits and what the standards require:

  • Toughened safety glass goes in doors, the panels beside them, wet areas and glass close to floor level. If it does break, it breaks into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards.
  • Laminated glass suits street-facing rooms, upper floors and anywhere security or noise matters. It stays in the frame when broken and softens train noise for homes near the line.
  • Double-glazed units are replaced like for like. Fogging means the edge seal has failed, so we swap the sealed unit and leave the frame in place.
  • Obscure and patterned glass covers ensuites, laundries and front door sidelights. Older patterns can be hard to match exactly, so we’ll show you the closest option first. The same applies if you’re also after a frameless or semi-frameless shower screen in that bathroom.

For more on glass grades and frame types, see our Sydney window glazing service.

What affects the cost?

Four things drive the price: the size of the pane, the type of glass, the frame material and how easy the window is to reach. A small pane in a ground-floor aluminium window is quick work. A large laminated panel in a first-floor unit, or a putty-glazed sash that needs gentle handling, takes longer and costs more.

You’ll get a fixed quote before any work starts. If you’re renting, we can quote and invoice through your property manager. For strata buildings, we deal directly with the strata manager when the window is common property. Itemised reports for insurance claims are available too.

How soon can you get to Asquith?

Most glass replacements are booked for the same day or the following morning. A broken window that leaves the home open goes to the front of the queue, and we attend after hours for break-ins and storm damage.

Cut-to-size or specialty glass can take one to three business days. Until it’s ready, we board up the opening or fit temporary cover so the house is secure overnight. We also work right across this corner of the Upper North Shore, including glass replacement next door in Hornsby Heights, so a van is often nearby.

What to expect when we arrive

We measure the opening itself rather than the broken piece, lift out the damaged glass, clean the rebate and check the seals before fitting the new pane. Broken glass leaves with us, and we vacuum before packing up, so there are no stray fragments hiding in the carpet or garden.

If anything else in the house has been bothering you, tell us while we’re there. Mirrored robe doors that jump off their track are a common extra in homes around Asquith, and they’re usually a quick fix.

Why Asquith locals book Amrah Glass & Aluminium

We’re a fully insured Sydney glazing business that works to the Australian Standards, not around them. Our prices are fixed up front, our arrival times are ones we actually keep, and the glazier who measures your window is the one who fits it. We can also look at a cracked bathroom or vanity mirror on the same visit, which saves you booking twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace the glass in old timber windows in Asquith?
Yes. We reglaze putty-fixed timber sashes by removing the old putty and glazing points, priming the rebate and bedding the new pane in fresh putty. The putty needs a couple of weeks before it can be painted.

Is it cheaper to repair a window than replace the whole thing?
In most cases, yes. If the frame is sound, only the glass and any worn parts such as rubbers, beading or locks are replaced. A full window replacement is only needed when the frame is rotted, bent or out of square.

My house is near bushland. Does that affect the replacement glass?
It can. Homes built to a Bushfire Attack Level rating need glazing that meets AS 3959 for that level, which often means toughened glass. We check the existing glass and frame before ordering.

Do you work on apartments and townhouses near Asquith station?
Yes. We regularly deal with strata managers and property managers, and we can invoice them directly when the window is common property or the home is rented.

How quickly can a broken window be made secure?
Usually the same day. If the permanent pane has to be cut to size, we board up the opening or fit temporary cover first, then come back to install the new glass.

Do you replace glass in factory units and offices in Asquith?
Yes. We replace large fixed panes, glazed entry doors and office partitions for businesses in Asquith’s industrial area.

Can you fix a window that sticks or won’t lock?
Often, yes. Worn rollers, broken sash cords, tired catches and perished seals can usually be repaired without replacing the glass or the frame.

Which suburbs near Asquith do you service?
Hornsby, Hornsby Heights, Mount Colah, Mount Ku-ring-gai, Waitara, North Wahroonga, Wahroonga, Berowra and the wider Hornsby Shire.
