Tinted and filmed windows

A lot of homes here have window film, either fitted by the builder’s supplier or added later for the heat. It changes a glass job in three ways, so mention it when you call.

The film is destroyed with the pane. Film is bonded to the glass. When the pane is replaced, the film goes with it.

Matching matters. A fresh clear pane sitting in a row of tinted windows stands out badly from the street. Options are re-filming the new pane to match, or ordering tinted glass instead, where the colour runs through the glass rather than sitting on the surface.

Film on ordinary glass raises the heat risk. Dark film traps heat in the pane, and in a Penrith summer that is one of the reasons windows crack with nobody touching them. If the pane we’re replacing was filmed and it cracked from heat, we’ll usually suggest toughened or factory-tinted glass instead of re-filming.

Send a photo showing the window and its neighbours. We’ll tell you what will and won’t match.

Parts for estate-era windows

Most of Glenmore Park went up between the mid 1990s and the 2000s, so the windows share a handful of systems and the same parts wear out across whole streets.

What fails first: sliding window rollers, awning winders, latches and catches, and the weather seal along the sash.

The catch is that some original parts were discontinued years ago. Where the exact item is gone, a generic equivalent usually fits, and where it doesn’t, the hardware can be changed over to a current type that does the same job. Either way it is a repair, not a new window, and it costs a fraction of replacement.

If a roller or winder has failed on one window, check the rest of the house while we’re there. They were all installed on the same day and they wear out on roughly the same schedule.

Which windows crack first in a heatwave

West and north-west facing panes, every time. Especially where part of the glass sits in shade from an eave, an awning, a pergola or a dark blind pulled halfway down.

The hot section expands, the shaded edge doesn’t, and the stress breaks the glass from the edge inward. No impact point, no chip, just a crack that starts at the frame.

If a particular window has done this twice, replacing like for like is throwing money away. Toughened glass handles the temperature difference far better.

What we do

  • Replace cracked, smashed and chipped panes
  • Supply toughened and laminated safety glass where the rules require it
  • Replace fogged double glazed units, glass only, frame kept
  • Fit obscure glass for bathrooms and entries
  • Repair rollers, winders, locks, catches, rubbers, beading and seals
  • Clear blocked drainage slots and reseal leaking frames
  • Board up or fit clear temporary sheeting the same day
  • Supply photos and itemised invoices for insurers, landlords and agents

Getting a price

Send a wide photo of the window, a close-up of the damage and rough measurements to 0468 497 928. The quote comes back the same day, itemised, with the glass type and thickness listed. Exact sizes are checked on site before anything is cut.

Stock clear glass usually goes in the same day or the next morning. Toughened, laminated, obscure and tinted panes are made to order over one to three working days. Double glazed units take a little longer.

The same turnaround applies across the area, including window glass replacement in South Penrith and broken window glass in Erskine Park.

Safety glass rules

Doors, the panels beside doors, bathrooms and any window near floor level must have Grade A safety glass. That applies regardless of what was fitted when the house was built. Glass types are explained on our page about repairing and replacing window glass in Sydney.

Frequently Asked Questions

My tinted window broke. Will the new glass match?
Not on its own. The film goes with the old pane, so the new glass is either re-filmed or ordered as factory-tinted glass to match.

Is window film a problem on ordinary glass?
Dark film traps heat in the pane and raises the risk of heat cracks, which is why toughened or factory-tinted glass is often the better swap.

My window cracked in the heat with nothing hitting it. Why?
Part of the pane heats and expands while a shaded edge stays cool. The stress cracks the glass from the edge.

The roller in my sliding window has worn out. Is the part still available?
Often the original is discontinued, but a generic equivalent fits most estate-era windows, or the hardware can be changed to a current type.

Can several windows be repaired in one visit?
Yes, and it makes sense here since the hardware across the house wears out at the same rate.

How soon can a broken window be secured?
Same day. We board up or fit clear sheeting until the permanent glass arrives.
