Ask anyone in West Pymble about their windows and you’ll hear the same two things. They’re big, and they’re old.
The suburb filled out in the 1960s and 70s, when architects were putting glass walls across the back of houses to bring the bush inside. Those windows still look great. They’re also heavy, awkward to work on, and built with frames that no longer come off a shelf.
Amrah Glass & Aluminium fixes and replaces them. All glass meets AS 1288, you get the price before we lift a finger, and nothing is left open overnight.

A floor-to-ceiling pane isn’t just a bigger version of a bedroom window.
Weight is the first thing. Glass gets heavy fast, and a pane that size needs two people and suction lifters to carry, let alone lift into place. That’s labour before a sheet of glass is even cut.
Second is the frame. Houses from that period often hold the glass between timber posts, with a bead or putty rather than a modern aluminium channel. The original beads are rarely available now, so they get carefully removed and reused, or matched in new timber. Rushing that step is how you end up with a window that leaks.
Third is getting the glass to the opening. Side paths in this part of the north shore tend to be narrow, sloped and full of garden. We check the route before quoting, because carrying a large sheet down a wet sandstone step isn’t something you work out on the day.
Send a photo from well back, plus one showing the path from the street. It changes the quote more than people expect.
Here’s one that catches people out every cold snap.
Put a heater close to a window and the glass heats unevenly. The part in front of the heat expands. The part near the frame, which stays cool, doesn’t. The stress builds at the edge until the pane cracks, and nothing has touched it.
Wood heaters do the same through radiant heat if they sit close to a window. So do portable heaters left running against the glass, and in summer, a BBQ pulled up near the house.
Signs it was heat and not an impact:
The fix is new glass. The prevention is simple: keep heaters at least a metre clear of windows, and if a spot has cracked twice, toughened glass handles the temperature swing far better than ordinary glass.
A lot of calls here aren’t about broken glass at all.
Timber swells in a wet week, so the window sticks. Putty dries out and falls away, leaving the pane loose enough to move. The bottom corner of a sill goes soft because water has sat there for twenty years. Beads split and let in draughts.
Most of this is repair work. We re-bed the glass, re-putty, replace beads and leave the original frame in place. Replacing a window of this type is expensive and rarely matches the ones beside it, so we only suggest it when the timber has gone through.
Press the sill with a screwdriver before you ring anyone. If it gives, mention that when you call. The same checks come up across the bush blocks at broken window glass in South Turramurra.
Standard clear panes go in the same day or the morning after. Toughened, laminated, patterned and double-glazed glass is cut to order, which runs one to three working days. Oversized sheets can take a little longer.
The price moves with the size and thickness of the pane, the glass type, the state of the frame, how the window is reached and how fast you need it. Whatever that figure is, you hear it before work starts, and there’s an itemised invoice if you’re claiming on insurance.
While glass is on order, we board up or fit a clear sheet so the house stays shut and dry.
We’re across this side of the north shore every week, including window glass replacement in Hornsby. If a pane went through this morning, read what to do with broken window glass before you start sweeping, and our page on repairing and replacing glass in Sydney windows sets out the glass types.
Glass in a door, in the panel beside a door, in a bathroom, or anywhere close to floor level has to be safety glass. Toughened or laminated.
Houses of this age are full of large low panes that were fitted long before that rule existed. When one breaks, the new glass must meet the standard, even though the old one did not. It costs a little more. It also means a child running into it walks away.

My window cracked near the heater and nothing hit it. Why?
Uneven heating. The warm part of the glass expands while the cool edge does not, and the stress breaks the pane.
How far should a heater sit from a window?
Keep at least a metre clear. If a pane has cracked twice in the same spot, toughened glass copes with the heat far better.
Why does a big pane cost so much more than a small one?
Weight and handling. Large sheets need two people and lifting gear, and getting them down a narrow side path takes time.
Can my old timber window be repaired instead of replaced?
In most cases, yes. We re-bed the glass, re-putty and replace split beads, and the original frame stays.
My window sticks after rain. Is that serious?
Timber swells when wet and shrinks back. If it keeps sticking, check the sill for soft timber, which means rot.
Does a big low window need special glass now?
Yes. Glass near floor level, in doors and in bathrooms must be toughened or laminated, whatever was there before.
Which suburbs near West Pymble do you cover?
Pymble, South Turramurra, Gordon, St Ives, Killara, Lindfield, Macquarie Park and the surrounding upper north shore.
