Houses in Toongabbie have usually had a few owners, a few renovations and a lot of paint. That history is why the window work here is rarely just a matter of dropping in a new pane. Amrah Glass & Aluminium re-glazes and repairs windows across the suburb, in the original cottages, the 1970s and 80s brick homes, the newer duplexes and the units near the station.
All glass meets AS 1288, quotes are fixed before work starts, and anything broken gets made safe the same day.

This is the most common thing we deal with in older Toongabbie homes, and it causes more broken glass than people realise.
When a timber window gets painted, the paint usually goes over the putty, the beads and the join between sash and frame. Do that a few times over thirty years and the window effectively becomes glued shut. Then someone puts their shoulder into it on a hot day, the sash suddenly gives way, and the pane cracks or a bead splits off.
If a window in your house won’t budge, don’t force it. The paint seal can be cut with a blade along the joint, which releases the sash without stressing the glass. We do this as part of the job when we’re re-glazing, and it’s worth having done on windows that haven’t opened in years. A painted-shut bedroom window is also a problem in a fire, since it’s meant to be a way out.
Paint over putty causes a second issue. Once the paint film cracks, water gets in behind it and sits against the putty and timber, and the putty crumbles away faster than it would bare. That’s why we sometimes find a pane that’s loose in the rebate on a window that looks perfectly painted from a metre away.
A fair number of homes here were built when fibro sheeting was standard, and that material may contain asbestos. It’s safe when it’s intact and left alone.
Standard glass replacement doesn’t disturb wall sheeting. We take the glass out of the frame and put new glass back in, and the surrounding lining isn’t touched. But if a job would mean cutting, drilling or breaking sheeting around the opening, such as reframing a window or widening it, that’s work for a licensed asbestos removalist, not a glazier. We’ll tell you if we think that’s what you’re facing rather than quietly cutting into it.
If you’re not sure what your walls are, a licensed assessor can confirm it. It’s a cheap check and it settles the question before any renovation starts.
Properties near Toongabbie Creek and the lower-lying streets cop the worst of the heavy rain, and the damage shows up in the frames as much as the panes.
Worth looking at once things dry out:
A pane cracked by a flying branch is a straightforward fix. A frame that has been sitting wet needs looking at before new glass goes in, because glass fitted into rotten timber won’t stay put. Homes over toward Blacktown have the same issue along the creek lines.
Toongabbie has a lot of knockdown rebuilds and duplex sites, and construction next door accounts for a steady number of our call-outs. Bricks, offcuts, flying debris during demolition, and stones thrown up by machinery.
Two practical notes. Photograph the damage straight away, including a shot showing the building site in the background, because the timing matters if you’re asking the builder to cover it. Second, get an itemised quote rather than a verbal figure. Builders and their insurers want something in writing with the glass type and size listed. We provide that as standard, and we’re happy to deal with the builder directly if you’d rather not.
Construction dust and render splatter also scratch glass badly. Light scratching can sometimes be polished, but anything you can feel with a fingernail means the pane gets replaced.
Cracked, shattered, deeply scratched or internally fogged glass has to be replaced. There’s no way to repair a crack in window glass that lasts, and a fogged double-glazed unit can’t be cleaned out because the moisture is sealed inside.
Plenty of other problems don’t need new glass at all. Rattling usually means the putty or rubbers have gone. Sticking often means paint or swollen timber. A window that won’t lock is normally a hardware issue. Water in the track is usually blocked drainage. We fix all of these, and we’d rather do a thirty minute repair than sell you glass you don’t need.
One thing we can’t ignore: if the old pane sits in a doorway, beside a door, in a bathroom or close to floor level, the replacement has to be Grade A safety glass even if the original wasn’t. That’s not us upselling, it’s what the standard requires for each location.
Standard clear glass is usually fitted same day or next morning. Toughened, laminated and patterned glass is cut to order and takes one to three business days, with a board-up in the meantime if the window is broken.
Cost comes down to pane size and thickness, glass type, frame condition, access and urgency. Send a wide photo of the window, a close-up of the damage and rough measurements, and we can generally quote without attending first.
We work through this corridor constantly, from the Prospect side of the highway out past Minchinbury, so response times here are short. If the glass has only just broken, cleaning up safely after a break is worth two minutes of reading first.

My window is painted shut. Can it be opened without breaking the glass?
Yes. The paint seal is cut along the joint with a blade, which frees the sash without stressing the pane. Forcing it is what cracks glass.
Will replacing glass disturb asbestos in an older home?
Standard glass replacement doesn’t touch wall sheeting. If the opening itself needs cutting or reframing, that’s work for a licensed asbestos removalist.
My timber window sticks after heavy rain. Is the glass the problem?
Usually not. Timber swells when it’s wet and shrinks back as it dries. Persistent sticking can point to rot at the sill, which needs checking.
A builder next door broke my window. What should I do?
Photograph the damage with the site visible and get an itemised written quote. Builders and insurers need the glass type and size in writing.
Can render splatter be polished off?
Light marks often can. Deeper scratches you can feel with a fingernail mean the pane needs replacing.
Does a bathroom window need special glass?
Yes. Bathrooms, doors, windows beside doors and panes near floor level generally need Grade A safety glass.
