A surprising number of windows around here have something cut into the glass. A round vent. A bathroom exhaust fan. A pet door. A panel where a window air conditioner sits.
Here’s the part most people don’t know. A hole cannot be cut into toughened glass. Toughening happens last, after the sheet is cut and any holes are drilled, which is why the hole has to be part of the order from the start. Try to drill toughened glass afterwards and it shatters instantly.
So when a pane with a cut-out breaks:
If you’re thinking about putting a pet door into a glass pane, the same applies. The glass is made with the hole in it, not modified later.
These cause two kinds of jobs.
The first is a cracked pane around a unit that’s still in use. Heat, weight and vibration all work on the glass. We replace the pane and make sure the infill panel around the unit seals properly, so you’re not cooling the backyard.
The second is after the unit comes out. You’re left with a gap and a half-height window. We measure the opening and fit new glass to fill it, which turns it back into a proper window.
When a garage becomes a bedroom, or a granny flat goes up, the windows have to meet the same rules as the rest of the house.
The two that matter most:
Older conversions were often done without either being checked. When a pane breaks in one, the replacement has to follow the current rules, even if the original didn’t. Plain clear glass is usually in the same day or the next morning. Toughened, laminated, patterned, double-glazed and anything with a cut-out is made to order, which runs from a few days up to a week depending on the job. We board up or fit clear temporary sheeting while you wait.
The price depends on the size and thickness of the pane, the glass type, any holes or shapes needed, how easy the window is to reach and how urgent it is. You get the figure first, plus an itemised invoice for insurance.

Can you cut a hole in my existing glass for a pet door?
Not in toughened glass. Holes are made before the glass is toughened, so the pane is ordered with the hole already in it.
My window has an exhaust fan in the glass and the pane cracked. Can it be replaced?
Yes. We order a new pane with the same cut-out. Send a photo and rough measurements of where the hole sits.
Can you fill the gap left after removing a window air conditioner?
Yes. We measure the opening and fit glass so it becomes a normal window again.
Does my granny flat window need special glass?
If it’s in or beside a door, in a bathroom, or close to the floor, it needs safety glass. Bedroom windows also need to open properly.
How long does glass with a cut-out take?
Longer than a plain pane, usually several days to a week, because the hole is made at the supplier before toughening.
Is a rattling window a glass problem?
No. The rubber holding the pane has gone hard. Replacing it is quick and cheap.
