Which glass should you choose?

When a pane has to be replaced, you’ve usually got three options.

Clear glass is the standard choice for bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens. It’s the cheapest, it’s quick to get, and it’s fine anywhere the rules don’t call for something stronger.

Toughened glass is required in doors, beside doors, in bathrooms and in windows near the floor. It’s far stronger than clear glass, and when it does break it goes into small blunt pieces instead of long shards. If your broken pane is in one of those spots, this is what goes back in, even if the old glass was plain.

Laminated glass is the pick for ground floor windows facing a street, a lane or a side passage. Two sheets are bonded with a clear layer between them, so it cracks but holds in the frame. It also cuts outside noise, which helps on the busier roads.

Tell us which room the window is in and we’ll tell you which one it needs.

Homes and rentals

We work on houses, units, townhouses and granny flats right across the area.

Most common jobs: smashed panes after a break-in or an accident, cracks that have spread across a window, double glazing that’s gone cloudy between the layers, and old plain glass in bathrooms and doors that has to be upgraded when it breaks.

For renters, report the damage to your agent or landlord first. Anything that leaves the property unsecure is treated as urgent in NSW. Agents and landlords can book us directly, and we send photos and the invoice through for the owner’s file. If you manage several properties around Mount Druitt, we can attend more than one address in the same run.

Shops, offices and business units

For businesses around the centre and along the main roads, the priority is getting the frontage closed and trade back to normal.

  • Same-day board-up or clear sheeting so you can keep the doors open
  • Toughened or laminated glass for entries, frontages and public areas
  • Fitting before opening or after close, so customers aren’t working around a cordon
  • Invoicing to the tenant, the landlord or the managing agent

If the same pane keeps getting knocked by trolleys, deliveries or equipment, say so when you book. Replacing it with identical glass just means paying for it again, and there are tougher options for that spot.

Repairs that don’t need new glass

A good share of our Mount Druitt call-outs turn out to be repairs, and they cost a fraction of a replacement:

  • Rattling in the wind — the rubber holding the pane has gone hard
  • A draught with the window shut — the soft seal along the sliding sash has worn away
  • Water sitting in the bottom track — the small drain holes are blocked with dirt
  • A slider that drags or jams — flat-spotted rollers or a dirty track
  • A handle that spins and does nothing — the gears in the winder have stripped
  • A window that won’t lock — the catch has worn or the frame has dropped slightly
  • Loose glass in an old timber frame — the putty has dried out and needs replacing

Point these out when we’re there for something else and they’re usually sorted in the same visit.

What we check before fitting new glass

A new pane only lasts if what holds it is sound. Before we fit anything we look at the frame, the rubbers and beading, and the drainage. If a timber sill has gone soft, or an aluminium frame is bent or corroded, we’ll tell you straight away rather than fitting glass into something that won’t hold it.

Most of the time the frame is fine and it’s a straight swap.

Getting a price

Send three things:

  1. A photo of the whole window from a few steps back
  2. A close-up of the damage
  3. Rough width and height

That’s enough for a fixed quote the same day, with the glass type listed so you know what you’re paying for. Larger, higher or unusual windows get measured on site before we order anything.

The price you approve is the price you pay.

How long it takes

  • Securing a broken window: same day
  • Standard clear glass: same day or next morning
  • Toughened, laminated and frosted glass: a few working days
  • Double glazed units: a little longer

While made-to-order glass is being cut, the opening stays boarded or clear-sheeted so nothing is left open overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can you secure a smashed window?
Same day, boarded or clear-sheeted until the new glass arrives.

What does a quote cost?
Nothing. Photos and rough sizes are enough for a fixed price.

Which glass is best for a ground floor window?
Laminated, if security is the concern. It holds together when struck.

Can a cracked pane be repaired?
No, it’s replaced. Repairs cover seals, rollers, winders and locks.

Why has my double glazing gone cloudy?
The seal has failed and moisture is trapped inside. Only that glass unit is replaced.

Can you work around our shop hours?
Yes, before opening or after close.

Will you deal with the real estate agent?
Yes, including sending photos and the invoice.

Do you work weekends?
Seven days a week.
